The Doona newborn car seat combines the functions of a stroller and a car seat. You don’t have to buy a stroller if you have Doona. The rear-facing seat is the best fit for all children under two. However, when they are a year old, most infants usually outgrow it.

I know how tedious it is to buy the components of my baby travel system separately. So you can imagine how happy I was to learn that Simple Parentin had unveiled a seat and stroller combo, namely the Doona car seat.

In this article, I’ll give five tips on safely using the Doona infant car seat. I will present the Doona seat’s specifications, use, position, and correct installation. While highlighting the advantages of the Doona seat, I’ll also compare it to another seat and stroller combo.

    1. Positioning The Doona Baby Car Seat

You want your newborn in the Doona car seat to be as safe as possible. But which position is ideal? I offer justification for the perfect position and explanations for the less desirable ones.

    Front Passenger

Although putting your infant in the front passenger seat may be tempting, I advise against it, as do safety experts. You’ll constantly lean over to have a peek, which will be a big distraction. Your baby could suffer harm in the event of emergency braking.

If your vehicle has no back seat and you must place your child in the front seat, manually deactivate the airbags. The infant’s car seat needs to be rear-facing. Place the child seat as far from the dashboard as you can. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends rear-facing seating for children under three years.

    Back Middle

The center back seat will offer your newborn the highest degree of protection from impacts of all kinds. In addition to being 43% safer than the other positions, it protects kids from side, front, and back injuries.

Your youngster is in a better position to escape from any injuries coming from the side of the vehicle in the event of a rollover. However, the middle back seat should have restraints to secure the Doona for the newborn properly

    Back Side Seats

If the central seat in the back does not have restraints, you can mount the Doona newborn on the back side seats. The back passenger side is the best. When the Doona seat is on the back passenger side, it makes it easier to check on your baby with a glance.

To remove your child from the seat, you didn’t need to lean over too much. Additionally, it will be safer if you wish to take your baby out of the car when it is parked on the sidewalk of a busy street.

    3rd Row Seats

Is it okay to position the Doona newborn seat in the third row if your vehicle has one? No, this is not recommended because you can’t see the infant in the third row since it is so far away. Getting your youngster in and out of the seat can be challenging.

Additionally, the third-row seat is too close to the back to offer any protection in the event of a rear collision.

    Multiple Car Seats

What actions should you take if you simultaneously have several kids in car seats? As the middle seat is typically the safest, put the child with the least protection in it. By this, I mean that you should put the child not in a baby car seat in the center, and the other kids in the car seat should be on each side.

If your car model is smaller, consider getting slimmer car seats so they can fit in the back seat.

    1. How To Install Doona For A Newborn

Knowing how to use and install the Doona Newborn correctly is another way to guarantee your baby’s safety. Here is a step-by-step process for installing the seat

    Folding The Doona

    • Use your foot to lock the wheels.
    • You can move the handlebar to the center by pressing the side buttons.
    • Pull it to the middle until it locks in with a click. When the seat collapses, squeeze the lever on the back while pressing down with your foot on the front wheels.

    Installing Doona With A Base

    • Place the base on the car seat.
    • Seize the lower anchor connector strap’sail.
    • Take the tail and weave it up and under towards your body.
    • To remove the slack, tug the strap a few times while applying pressure to one side of the base.
    • Repeat until the base stops moving altogether.
    • Confirm that the white ball is precisely in the green area on the incline indicator.
    • Place the infant car seat/stroller on the base.
    • Check the handle to confirm the seat is firmly locked into the base.
    • The indicator should turn from red to green.
    • Use the buttons on the side to change the handle into an anti-rebound bar.
    • The bar should go towards the furthest position (back towards your vehicle seat). It’s okay, even if it doesn’t touch the seat.

    Installing Doona Without A Base

    • In this process, the car seat belt acts as the base.
    • Put the baby car seat on the vehicle seat.
    • Make a recline adjustment.
    • You can see a red recline line on the opposite side of the seat.
    • The aim is to align it parallel to the level ground.
    • Push the handlebar toward the vehicle’s seat to put it in the anti-rebound position.
    • Pass the lap belt piece through the Doona seat’s handle belt guides.
    • Buckle it in.
    • Next, pull the shoulder belt out and pass it through the blue guide at the back of the Doona seat.
    • Ensure that the seat is firm and the shoulder belt locks.
    • Confirm that the red line remains parallel to the ground.

    Unfold Doona

    • Raise the grey stroller wheel release while pushing the red safety lock button.
    • Please press the button on top of the handlebars to make them longer and fit for a stroller.

    1. Comparing The Doona For Newborn With The EvenFlo Dualride

The only other seat that combines an infant seat and stroller is the EvenFlo Dual Tide. So that you can make an informed decision, let’s compare it to the Doona.

    Similarities

    • They both have the combo stroller/car seat setup.
    • Identical in size.
    • Front to back, they occupy the same room in the car.
    • They both occupy the same amount of space in terms of depth.
    • Width-wise, they’re about 18 inches.
    • Both seats have anti-rebound bar features. YoYou’llind the anti-rebound feature on the dual ride on the base itself. The DoDoona’snti-rebound bar is the stroller handle.

    Differences

    • If you don’t require the stroller part, you can use the dual ride as a carrier by removing it from the wheels. In the Doona, the wheels are permanently fastened to the seat.
    • A smaller (pre-term) newborn will fit in the dual ride much better than the Doona. This is due to the dual harness heights – the distance between the shoulder straps and your child’s shoulder – being able to accommodate a 3-pound baby. The straps should sit just below or on the shoulder for the best fit.
    • For the Doona, you use the headrest to adjust the strap positions. The Dual Ride straps require manual adjustment.
    • The headrest for the Dual Ride is longer than the one for the Doona. Therefore, you can use the Dual Ride as your child grows.

    Conclusion

The Doona Newborn is the go-to car seat when you don’t want to buy a stroller. Learn and install the best position correctly; you won’t have to worry about your infant’s safety in the car.
