Buyer’s Guide
As always, before we set you free to choose your child’s car seat, we want to give you a few things to keep in mind while making your decision. First and foremost, your child should be comfortable and should want to sit in their seat. Make sure you choose one that they can get excited about. Trust us, car rides will be much more fun that way.
Safety
Car seat manufacturers are required to put their seats through federal safety testing before they can be released on the market.
However, some companies go above and beyond and offer extra safety features like added side-impact protection and extra padding.
Keeping it Clean
For your own sake, you should also choose a seat that has removable fabric. Extra bonus points for the seat if you can run the cover through the washer and dryer. This makes clean-up super easy and a lot less stressful for you.
Durability
Heavier seats may be a turn-off for you but in most cases, the heavier the seat, the more durable it is. We’re all about lightweight seats for convenience but when it comes to safety, we’d rather opt for the heavier seat.
Budget
And last but not least, you should keep your budget in mind. You don’t have to spend top dollar in order to get a quality car seat. We don’t want you to feel like you have to buy a $250 car seat when a $100 one works just the same. Honestly, these two seats will probably have most, if not all, of the same features anyways.
Mickey & Minnie Car Seats For Every Age
There are different types of car seats, each with its own height and weight restrictions. Your child will need a specific seat depending on their age and size. Having a properly fitted car seat is proven to keep your child safer in the car (source).
Infant Carrier Seats
Infant carriers are meant for babies from birth until they reach anywhere between 22 to 35 pounds depending on the manufacturer. We’ve found that a lot of carriers nowadays accommodate between 32-35 pounds.
These seats are made specifically to keep your newborn safe and snug in the car. In the event of a crash, the seat is designed to rock and cradle with your child to keep their delicate head and spinal cord safe (source). They also come with a carrying handle so you don’t need to worry about getting the baby in and out of the seat when you go places.
They’ll also come with a base that you install in your car so you can easily click the seat in and out while on the go. These seats are only able to be used in rear-facing mode and your baby will grow out of the seat usually before their first birthday.
Convertible Car Seats
Minnie mouse car seats (Convertibles) are the next step up from the infant carrier. However, many manufacturers make their convertible seats to accommodate newborns as well. This means you have the choice to bypass the entire concept of the infant carrier if you want.
These seats are able to be installed in both rear and forward-facing position and will typically max out when your child reaches 65 pounds. With constantly changing guidelines and a big push being for extended rear-facing, many of these seats will allow rear-facing until between 40-50 pounds.
This is really nice considering most three-year-olds aren’t quite to 40 pounds yet. Your child can easily remain rear-facing until they reach age 4. It’s recommended that your child stays rear-facing until at least age 2.
Booster Seats
Once your child grows out of their convertible seat, you may be tempted to let them just use the seat belt. However, they still won’t be ready to only use the seat belt until they’re at least 57 inches tall.
The whole point of a Minnie mouse car seat (booster) is to help the seat belt sit properly across your child. The shoulder belt should lie firmly across the middle of your child’s shoulders and the belt guide should be just above the shoulder
The lap belt should sit firmly across your child’s upper thighs rather than across their abdomen. Most booster seats will accommodate your child up to 100 pounds, sometimes more. This is good because it’s likely your child will grow tall enough to not need the seat anymore before they reach the weight capacity.
All-In-One Seats
All-in-one seats are basically the first three seats mentioned all wrapped into one seat. They can accommodate your child starting at infancy and can be converted into a convertible seat and then a booster as well.
These are super convenient for the person who wants to do a one-and-done shopping trip. While these may be more expensive upfront, you end up saving money in the long run by not purchasing separate seats.
Travel Systems
Last, but not least, you can opt to buy a travel system. These are an infant seat and stroller combo and are super convenient because you can click the car seat right into the stroller when walking.
How to Install Your Child’s Seat
When it comes to installing your chosen car seat, the technique you’ll use will depend on what type you have. Infant carriers, convertibles, and all-in-one options can be installed via LATCH or through a designated belt path. Booster seats won’t need LATCH installation unless you have a 2-in-1 with a five-point harness.
LATCH Installation
LATCH technology was invented to help make safe car seat installation faster and easier for parents. The system uses anchors and tethers to hold the car seat in place rather than the car’s seat belt.
As long as your car was manufactured after 2002, your car will have LATCH compatibility. To install via LATCH, feed the LATCH strap through the designated belt path on the car seat.
Take the hooks on each end and attach them to the two anchors located in the crease where the vehicle seat cushion meets the backrest. Make sure the strap is flat and doesn’t get twisted during this process.
To tighten the strap, pull on the designated pull strap while holding down the middle of the car seat. This will ensure you have the tightest possible fit. Test the seat to make sure it doesn’t move more than one inch in any direction.
Seat Belt Installation
Seat belt installation is also really easy. Your child’s car seat will have a marked area to feed the seat belt through. Simply feed the seat belt through the belt path and buckle it in. Make sure you get rid of as much slack as possible and then lock off the seat belt.
